TOHH Summer Camp - Week Four

We had such a great week here at Tree of Hope Haiti! Our summer camp kids are learning so much, and we are so proud of them!

On Monday, we had a busy day. The kids have finished learning their weather words, so we have added weather to our morning circle! The kids just love coming to the front of the class to tell everyone the date and weather in English! On Monday, they also worked very hard on their addition facts!

On Tuesday, the kids made a number snake! They took strips of paper and wrote numbers on them, then stapled the pieces together in order. The younger kids counted by ones, while the older kids counted by tens! The kids do such a great job helping each other out in class!

We also worked on learning subjects in English. These kids are so smart, and are picking it up so fast!

On Wednesday, Cassandra worked with the older kids explaining the verb "to be." For example, we match "I" with "am" and "You" with "are." The kids practiced this with the word "happy!" The learned how to say "I am happy," "You are happy," "We are happy," etc.

During this time, the younger kids worked on number lines! They traced the numbers 1 through 10, then practiced their addition! They would put their finger on number one, then move it up one space to reach number two. This means one plus one equals two!

On Thursday morning, we had a cute surprise when the kids came into camp! Each day, while they wait for all the kids to arrive, they usually sit in a circle. Today, they started playing a game and singing! They sang a song in Creole that was like "Who Stole the Cookie From the Cookie Jar?" Check out the super cute videos of this in Facebook!

Once class started, the children did some work in their notebooks. They just love these notebooks! Each child has a special one with their name on it! :) The younger kids worked on writing their letters and numbers while the older kids worked on their subjects in English.

Later, the kids worked on addition using balloons. Two children came to the front of the class, and each were given balloons. They had to figure out how many they had all together!

On Friday, the children continued their work in their notebooks. Today, the younger children practiced writing the letters in their names. They are doing such a great job! The older children practiced their English!

We also continued working on subtraction with balloons! Two children came to the front of the class. One child was given some balloons, and had to figure out how many they had left if the other child took some!

Throughout the week, the children have also been working on something very special! (Hint hint: It involves guitar and singing!)

On Saturday, we had another movie night!! The kids absolutely love this! Most of them live without electricity, so watching a film is something truly special.

Not only that, but they got to have popcorn too! When we have movie nights, we invite all the children in the community including, but not limited to, the ones in our program. It was so special to see all the children, and to see their faces light up when the movie began!

We also did several home visits this week! Firstly, we went to see Diacle's (pronounced "Jacque's") house! His family welcomed us, and told us how grateful they were for the summer camp program, and everything the Tree of Hope has done. He lives in a two-room, cement floor house with seven other people, including his mom and two sisters. They have three beds - two twin and one full. They do not own mattresses. Instead they keep their clothes on the beds, and lay a sheet over them. Two people sleep on each bed, and two sleep on the floor.

Next, we went to see Linedialine and Presner's home! However, when we went, their family was not home, so we were not able to see inside.

We also went to Damaniel's house! His family lives on a property with three homes. One is small and has two beds. They also have a house built by the Be Like Brit organization (shown below).

The small house was most likely where they lived before the BLB house was built. In the small house, Damaniel sleeps with four brothers and two cousins (pictured on the right).
Two people sleep in one bed, and five sleep in the other. In the BLB house, Damaniel's sister sleeps with his parents. Damaniel's uncle has a small home next to this.

Lastly, we went to see Elie and Angeline's house! They live in a Tree of Hope house, built in February by Team Good News! We are so beyond grateful for each team that comes down to build a home for a family in need. This home and TOHH's sponsorship program has completely changed this family's life. Elie and Angeline live with their mom and two other sisters. By providing a home and an education for these two children, a huge burden has been lifted off of their mom's shoulders. She is so grateful, and has so much joy in her heart! In their home, they have two twin beds and one full bed. The two twin beds have mattresses. They also have a small kitchen area on the side. Elie and Angeline's mother works very hard as a bread vendor.

We also have some super exciting news! We have three new sponsored children this week!! How amazing is that?! We want to send a huge thank you on behalf of TOHH and the sponsored children and their families!  How special it was for us to tell these families that their children could continue school! This week, Penthia, Wilzer and Simonia were sponsored!

Penthia was our first #SponsorSaturday child. Here's a photo of her!
Wilzer may look familiar, because he has been helping out each day during our summer camp program!

Simonia is Wilzer's brother! They were so joyful to find out they had sponsors to continue school! Here's Simonia writing a letter to her new sponsor!

We are so excited for this upcoming week, and we can't wait to see what fun it brings! We will be sure to keep you updated with more blog posts! In the meantime, check out what we are doing during the week on social media! Have a blessed week!
